Bioluminescence in the deep sea.
Science
For most animals, the only way to communicate in the abyss of the deep sea is with living light - bioluminescence. I study why and how animals in the ocean are bioluminescent. To do this, I use techniques in computational biology, biochemistry, and chemistry.
Meet the Speaker:
Darrin was inspired to study bioluminescence by the fireflies during his time as an undergraduate in at Oberlin College in Ohio. This research took him from San Diego to study glowing marine worms, Japan to study fireflies, and now to the Monterey Bay area to study deep-sea bioluminescent jellies.
