HANDS ON: Determination of Vitamin C content of Energy Drinks

Science

The vitamin C content of solutions (like orange juice and Red Bull) can be measured by a colorimetric assay (one where the reaction can be monitored by a visible color change). The students will make a starch-iodine indicator and then use their indicator to qualitatively assess the relative amount of vitamin C in OJ, Red Bull and Lemonade. We will discuss the chemistry principles that are involved. This is a hands-on experiment, not a lecture.
