Meet the Speaker:
Professor Chang is a medical innovator at Stanford University since 2009. He divides his time among majority clinical care, translational research, and teaching locally and globally. As a full-time glaucoma and cataract surgeon and clinician scientist, Dr. Chang is an expert on the latest diagnostic imaging tools and minimally invasive eye surgery techniques. He leads multiple projects covering machine learning, blockchain, portable imaging/sensors, wearables, digital health, and telemedicine.
He is co-inventor of the first universal smartphone adapter to take pictures of the front and back of the eye, previously licensed to Digisight Technologies as the FDA-cleared PAXOS scope. He also co-founded a venture-backed smart device consumer health company, AVA, and advises multiple startups in addition to large biopharma and medical device corporations. Currently, he is Vice President of the Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society (APTOS). One of his original contributions is the creation of the medical design sprint, a week-long, end-to-end project-based learning experience to help innovators be more aware of the challenges in starting a healthcare company.
Dr. Chang received his MD from the combined BA/MD program at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a research and clinical glaucoma fellowship at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers, delivered more than 100 invited national and international lectures, been awarded many grants, and holds multiple patents.
